Responsible gambling

Keeping it in proportion

Online casino sites are entertainment, in the same bracket as a cinema ticket or a night out. They are not a way to make money, they are not a way to dig yourself out of a hole, and any operator suggesting otherwise should be treated with deep suspicion.

If gambling has stopped feeling like fun — or if a friend or family member's gambling is worrying you — the UK has free, confidential services that are very good at what they do. None of them are casinos. None of them will judge you.

If you want a break

The single most effective tool for an immediate stop is GAMSTOP. One free sign-up blocks you from every UK-licensed online gambling site for 6 months, 1 year or 5 years — your choice. UKGC-licensed operators are legally required to honour it. Many phones also let you block gambling content through your bank app (Monzo, Starling, Lloyds and most major UK banks have a switch) and through screen-time settings — both are worth pairing with GAMSTOP.

If you want to talk to someone

GamCare runs the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, free to call, 24 hours a day. Their advisers are trained specifically for gambling and won't push you anywhere you're not ready to go.

GambleAware is an independent charity that funds treatment and education and runs the BeGambleAware campaign. Their site is the most accessible starting point if you're not sure where to begin.

If you want to make a complaint about an operator

The UK Gambling Commission regulates UK online casinos. Complaints go to the operator first, then to the alternative dispute resolution (ADR) provider listed on the operator's website. The UKGC doesn't handle individual disputes directly, but its complaints guidance points you to the right place.

Practical limit-setting

  • Decide a session budget before you log in, not while you're playing.
  • Use the deposit limits inside the operator's responsible-gambling settings — they're free, they work, and they take 30 seconds to set.
  • Set a session time limit too. Most UK operators will prompt you when you hit it.
  • Never play to "win back" a loss. The maths doesn't change just because you want it to.
  • Keep gambling and credit cards separate. UK rules already ban credit cards for online gambling — keep it that way in spirit too.
